Overview

doc-img5The research pyramid described above gives a bird’s eye view of the process and ensures that the research is devised meaningfully, is relevant to the community we serve and that the outcomes reach back to the community where it can do the maximum good for society. Thus research projects in the University are not merely research for the sake of research but a scientific enquiry into contemporary issues that leads to formation of new knowledge and/or processes. The Yenepoya Research Centre was formed in 2007, which served as a central point and a catalyst. Since then, there has been a steady increase in number of research proposals undertaken and publication output. The publications by our faculty, in national, international reputed journals and books have reached close to 1000. 22 patents have been filed and three more are awaiting submission.

The creation of Yenepoya University Ethics Committee and the Institutional Animal Ethics Committee (2008) ensures that no research done on either human subjects or animals goes against the ethical guidelines laid down by Indian Council of Medical Research or other such agencies. These ethics committees function independently and so are free from administrative bias or influence. Undergraduate and postgraduate students are encouraged to apply for grants from Indian Council of Medical Research under either short term scholarships or postgraduate scholarships. This gives them enthusiasm to conduct research responsibly and also ensures that their interest in research extends beyond the boundaries of their curriculum.

Yenepoya University has kept aside a “seed grant” to encourage teachers to engage more meaningfully in research. Many projects with external funding are on-going and the number of publications in peer-reviewed journals has gone up. 162 candidates have registered for PhD under 24 departments and a significant number of the Ph.D proposals are dealing with emerging areas of Genomics, proteomics, Regenerative medicine, Infectious diseases, Communicable and Non Communicable diseases, lifestyle disorders and health care delivery issues relating to tribal, adolescent girls and other socially relevant areas.

University has created 10 centres of excellence in emerging and thrust areas. University has a separate dedicated directorate for PhD studies. 24 departments and 61 teachers have been recognized as research guides. Till date 61 students have been awarded PhD, 6 students have submitted the thesis and 2 students have submitted their final Synopsis. University has received more than 200.00 lakhs research grants from National and International funding agencies for research projects.

University has evolved a Junior Research Fellowship Scheme, Post Doctoral fellowship, and Research Associate programmes for encouraging full time research in emerging areas of medicine. Seed Grant programmes for young faculty and incentive scheme for publications are some of the important research promotion methods adopted to attract young faculty towards research. During last four years 95 UG students have received STS-ICMR research fellowship for the projects. University has spent more than 1500.00 lakhs during the last 4 years for upgrading central research laboratory which will be further upgraded this year to accommodate sophisticated instruments to the tune of 15 crores. Twenty eight dedicated faculty scientists are working in this centre. Sixty Nine MoU’s have been signed with reputed institutions and industries for faculty exchange and joint research projects. There is a Research Advisory Board, Research Malpractice Prevention Committee, Research Committee, Board of PG Teaching and Research. Till date, 130 workshop/training, 18 conferences and 33 seminars have been conducted by the University/departments for promoting Research and Development.

Research Mobilization

The Research budget of Rs. 1516.82 lakhs was allotted for research activities during last four years. For the year 2015-16, Rs. 15 Cr. research budget has been allotted for purchasing of sophisticated equipments. All the departments are recognized as research centres by the university and offer PhD programmes in their respective thrust areas in line with National funding agencies. University has a separate IPM and UII Cells which facilitates industrial interaction and patent filing and technology transfers. Twenty two patents have been filed by the University through its IPM Cell and one of the technologies developed is ready for commercialization through technology transfer.

Research Facilities

The Central Research facility has 1424.44 sq.mt. area and houses sophisticated next generation equipment’s like Orbitrap Fusion Tribrid Mass Spectrophotometer and FT Mass Spectrophotometers to carry out Proteomics, Genomics, Metabolomics and Transcriptomics research. Centre also has facility for regenerative medicine (FACS), tissue engineering, computational biology and Biostatistics, Molecular Microbiology, Cell culture and toxicology related experiments. The Animal House facility has a latest IVC system for small animals and is recognized by CPCSEA. Yenepoya University has the Medicinal Plant Garden with 80 medicinal plants from Western Ghats.

University has created a separate directorate for PhD program with facilities for presentations, interactions and training. University follows UGC PhD regulation 2009 wherein two publications in reputed indexed journals before submission have been made mandatory. Review through the foreign examiner and six monthly progress reviews have been made compulsory. E-learning has been made mandatory for all the students.

Consultancy

The IPM Cell has developed consultancy rules and policy. A separate UIIC has been created for the said purpose. University has received more than 300 lakhs from the Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR) activities for rural health care development programs. Five clinical trials are ongoing in Medical and Dental Colleges. 22 patents have been filed by the IPM Cell of the University during the last four years and a patent will be commercialised soon.
